Why One-Pot Meals Are the Best

Before we dive into the recipe, can we just take a moment to appreciate how awesome one-pot meals are? As the weather cools down, there’s nothing better than having a big pot of something delicious simmering on the stove. Plus, it means less cleanup! You can toss everything into one pot and let it cook while you kick back and relax.

One-pot meals like this Swamp Soup are perfect for busy families, especially when everyone is craving something warm and filling but you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. Whether you’re feeding a crowd or meal prepping for the week, this is one of those recipes you’ll want to add to your regular rotation. It’s packed with flavor, hearty enough to keep you full, and oh-so-easy to make.

The Ingredients You’ll Need for Swamp Soup My Way

Here’s what you’ll need to whip up this flavorful dish:

  • 2 cans of Margaret Holmes Seasoned Turnip Greens
  • 2 cans of Margaret Holmes Field Peas and Snaps
  • 1 can of Margaret Holmes Tomatoes, Okra, and Corn
  • 1 can of Rotel Tomatoes
  • 1 can of Navy Beans
  • 1 onion, chopped (using my Coolina knives to make chopping a breeze!)
  • 1 whole bulb of garlic, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of seasoning (use your favorite blend – I like mine with a little heat)
  • 2 tablespoons of chicken bouillon powder
  • 1 to 2 pounds of Conecuh smoked sausage, sliced
  • 1/2 stick of butter
  • About 3 lbs of red potatoes, cut into pieces

Why Margaret Holmes Canned Vegetables?

I’m going to let y’all in on a little secret – the key to getting that rich, deep flavor in this soup comes from the Margaret Holmes canned vegetables. If you can find them, I highly recommend using them because they’re already seasoned to perfection. I know canned vegetables sometimes get a bad rap, but these are different. They come packed with flavor, saving you time and effort. But if you can’t find them, don’t worry, you can still use regular canned veggies and just season them to taste.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Swamp Soup

Now for the fun part – putting it all together! This soup couldn’t be easier to make, and it’s the perfect recipe to keep on hand for those cooler evenings when you want something hearty and satisfying.

1. Brown the Sausage, Onions, Bell Peppers, and Garlic

In a large pot or Dutch oven, start by browning the smoked sausage on your electric cooktop. Conecuh sausage has that smoky, savory flavor that really elevates the soup, but any good smoked sausage will do the trick.

As the sausage browns, toss in your chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Using my Coolina knives made quick work of the chopping! Cook everything together until the veggies are tender but still have a little crisp to them. The garlic and onions will create the perfect base for the soup, filling your kitchen with that amazing aroma that makes everyone come running.

2. Add the Potatoes and Butter

Once the sausage and veggies are browned and tender, add in the diced red potatoes and half a stick of butter. Let the potatoes cook with the sausage and veggies for about 5 to 8 minutes. This step helps the potatoes soak up all those delicious flavors, making every bite of this soup hearty and rich.

3. Add All the Canned Vegetables

Now comes the easy part! Start adding in all the canned vegetables: the turnip greens, field peas and snaps, tomatoes, okra and corn, Rotel tomatoes, and navy beans. Give everything a good stir to combine.

4. Season the Soup

Next, sprinkle in your seasoning blend and the chicken bouillon powder. These two ingredients add an extra layer of flavor to the soup. If you like a little heat, feel free to use a Cajun seasoning or something with a bit of a kick. Stir everything together, making sure the seasoning is evenly distributed.

5. Simmer the Soup

Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer on your electric cooktop. Cover the pot and let the soup cook for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the better the flavors get!

6. Serve It Up

Once the soup is done simmering, it’s time to serve it up! We like to serve our Swamp Soup over a bed of jasmine rice with a side of homemade buttermilk cornbread. The rice soaks up all that delicious broth, and the cornbread is perfect for dunking. Trust me, once you try this combo, you’ll never want to eat soup any other way.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There are a million reasons to love Swamp Soup My Way, but here are just a few:

  • It’s easy. Seriously, this is one of the easiest recipes you’ll ever make. Throw everything in a pot, let it simmer, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, hearty meal.
  • It’s customizable. You can tweak the ingredients to suit your taste. Don’t like turnip greens? Swap them out for kale. Prefer black beans over navy beans? Go for it. This recipe is super flexible.
  • It feeds a crowd. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering or just want leftovers for the week, this soup makes enough to feed a small army. And it tastes even better the next day!
  • It’s budget-friendly. Using canned vegetables and smoked sausage makes this an affordable meal without sacrificing flavor.
  • It’s perfect for cold weather. There’s nothing like a big pot of soup to warm you up when the temperatures start to drop.
